On the move with: Robert A. Lee, MD, a family physician at the Iowa Clinic in Johnston. He is also a member of the Iowa Medical Society.

AMA member since: 1984.

What inspired me to pursue a career in medicine: I believe we need to leave the world better than we found it. Helping people achieve and maintain optimal health is my calling to do this.

How I move medicine: I try to share the passion for medicine and leadership with the next generation of physicians.

Career highlights:

  • Board member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
  • President of the Iowa Medical Society.
  • President of the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians.

Advice I’d give to those interested in pursuing a career in medicine: Pick a specialty that does not seem like work. Enjoy every day. Are you able to give back for the education you have been given?

How I give back to the community: I have been a board member for the Science Center of Iowa. The center allows young people the opportunity to explore science. I was on the Urbandale library board, and we built a new building, continuing the education component. I have also been team physician for my local high school, my arena football team and my pro hockey team.

Aspect of my work that means the most: When patients come back in and tell me how I have impacted their life.

My hope for the future of medicine: That we continue to advance the science of medicine and encourage patients to become the healthiest self they can be.
